A discount is the reduction in the cost of an item or a job.

ContractorTools allows you to apply discounts to jobs or individual items within a job.ย

Job Discounts

To add a discount to a job, open the job, select "Job Info", then select "Discount". This takes you to the Discount entry screen:

The name of the discount defaults to "Discount", but you can change that to be more descriptive. The name appears in the customer estimate document to describe what the discount is for.

Discounts can be based on a percentage applied to the whole job, or to individual cost types (Materials, Labor, etc.). If you tap the "Cost Type" tab, you can enter a different discount percentage for each cost type.

When you enter a job discount, it is applied to all items in the job, unless you "override" the discount in individual items (explained below).

For example, if you wanted to give a 10% discount on all of the labor in a job, you would select the "Cost Type" tab, then enter 10% under Labor.

If you enter a discount in a job template, it will be automatically copied to jobs created from that template. You can then edit the discount in the job if you want to change it.

Item Discounts

To add discount(s) to individual items in a job, open the job, select "Estimate", then select the item, then, in the item information screen, scroll down and select "Overrides". In the Overrides screen, select "Discount". This takes you to the Discount entry screen:

The tabs at the top of the screen say "Default Discount" and "Override". When "Default Discount" is selected, the screen displays the discounts that are set in the job discount (if any). If you want to set a discount for the individual item, tap the "Override" button. That will display a discount entry screen similar to the one for the job discount, except with individual items, you can enter either percentage or fixed dollar amount discounts by cost type.

Again, the name defaults to "Discount", but you can change it to be more descriptive. The name appears in the customer estimate document.
